Happy New Year, Daughters of 1812!!

On Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at 11:00a.m. our chapter will gather for the 6th consecutive year around the 1812 monument on the Garrison Lawn at Ft. Johnston in Southport, NC  to commemorate the 205th Anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans fought on January 8, 2015. Lunch will follow at Fishy Fishy.  Not a meeting, this is always a fun event and a time for some great fellowship.  Our first event in 2015 took place on a sunny, 16-degree day.  One never knows what to expect here.

On Saturday, February 1st at 10 am the Commissioner Charles Gause Chapter will meet at the newly renovated Indian Trail Meeting Hall, 113 W Moore St next to the Harper Library.  Doors open at 9:30. Lunch will follow at another local restaurant TBA (Fishy Fishy will be closed for their annual spiff-up).  Gen. Don Parker, former Commander of Sunny Point, was our scheduled speaker, but his house sold fast, and he and Debbie have moved to Florida.  We have a substitute program plan.

Kitsy Lackey reminds us to collect and bring Box Tops for Education.   Please bring to our Feb 1st meeting. Thank you Kitsy!  And Dale Spencer is still collecting for the VA Clinic in Wilmington.  Please bring items for that effort as well.

Friday, May 22 is National Maritime Day, and our Chapter plans to gather, as we did last year, at the Maritime Monument in Waterfront Park downtown Wilmington on that morning to lay a wreath and honor our nation’s Mariners.  Last year was our first time to do this lovely and moving commemoration.  More information will be forthcoming.  Naturally, lunch will follow!

Our June meeting will be the first Saturday, June 6, at 11 am (doors open at 11) the Pilot House on Water Street downtown Wilmington.  Dolley Madison will be our VIP guest speaker (in the form of the delightful Jane Thomas of Cherokee Chapter in Greensboro).  What fun!!

See you all soon,
Kathy Miller, President
Cindy Sellers, Vice President

Commissioner Charles Gause No.433 Chapter of the National Society of the United States Daughters of 1812 distributed wreaths to hundreds of people to place on graves at The Wreaths Across America event on December 14, 2019, at Wilmington National Cemetery, Wilmington, NC. They united with other organizations that day to make this a success.

Wreaths Across America - Let's Put a Wreath on Every Grave
There are over 5,000 graves at the Wilmington National Cemetery. We were very close to placing a wreath on every grave, but often people wait until the last minute to purchase a wreath. Let’s start early next year and begin buying wreaths as soon as January 2020. Wreaths may be purchased in memory or in honor of someone. Goggle the website below to go directly to the 1812 Wreaths Across America site. Each wreath costs $15 and can be paid by credit card.  Provide your e-mail address and you will receive a receipt.  www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/nc0025p There are many other organizations that are sponsoring Wreaths Across America, so be sure you have your group’s ID# and location # when ordering a wreath. The location is Wilmington National Cemetery or NCWNCE and the Group ID# for the Commissioner Charles Gause 1812 group is NC00025P. If anyone wants to purchase a wreath and credit a different sponsor their specific Group ID number must be given. The cemetery code will remain the same. Orders can be made from the main website at wreathsacrossamerica.org/ or by mail to Wreaths Across America, P.O. Box 249, Columbia Falls, ME 04623. You can all call 877-385 9504 to place an order. Let’s get started early next year and be ensure a wreath on every grave. There is also a Wreaths Across America Tab on this blog. You can make a difference by just buying one wreath.

Thanks to every Daughter who donated money to the Durham VA Medical Center through the North Carolina Daughters of 1812 VAVS. With that money my deputy, Emily Cooper, and I have been able to purchase much-needed supplies for the hospital.
Over the past several months we’ve delivered groceries (flip-top canned soups and fruits) for homeless veterans as well as cases of coffee cups and decaffeinated coffee for various hospital wards and clinics.

Thank you for your generosity and caring. This veteran truly appreciates your support.

Presidents Report
Commissioner Charles Gause Chapter#433

As President of the Commissioner Charles Gause Chapter, I can say that I work with a great, motivated group of women.  We started off the year with purchasing rack cards, Star Spangled Posters and these were placed in area libraries and community centers to promote Patriotic Education.  100 copies of The Star Spangled Banner by Nancy Lambert, a Smithsonian Level 4 book for young readers were purchased and distributed to 3 counties, Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender County elementary schools.  Each school library received 2 books and 2 Star Spangled Banner Day rack cards.  The books were distributed by Co-Chairs Kitsy Lackey and Cindy Gulledge, Librarian, Susan De Groote, and member Dale Spencer.   The goal was to have this completed by Flag Day, September 14th, but we were interrupted by Hurricane Florence.  After Florence and some New Hanover county schools having to be relocated Chair Kitsy Lackey collected 278 Box Tops for Education from chapter members and these were given to Alderman Elementary school in Wilmington, NC.

To the meeting agendas we added the new Ritual, and a Flag Minute led by member Ann Boone. Chapter By-Laws were revised by a committee of chapter members and presented at the October meeting and voted in at the February meeting. Changes included e-communication voting and Standing rules for chapter property.
Veterans Chair Dale Spencer collected $147.23 for our local VA Clinic in Wilmington.

The CCG Chapter presented 8 awards, medals and $200.00 cash to area High school ROTC/JROTC programs on their respective awards night.
Members also participated in The Battle of New Orleans on January 8th at the 1812 monument on the lawn at Ft. Johnston, Southport, NC,  Wreaths Across America, Chair Carol Hart reported 39 wreaths sold, and placed on graves at the National Cemetery in Wilmington,  4th of July parade in Southport, and the Friends of Ft. Caswell Rifle Range WWI monument, Caswell Beach, Oak Island, NC.,  May 22nd  Merchant Marine Day.

Four new members have joined Commissioner Charles Gause since last August.
In excess of $700.00 was donated by the CCG Chapter which included $200 to the North Carolina room at National Headquarters, $100 Ancestor Plaque in memory of Bonnie Becmer Hardy, $100 to Chalmette Battlefield, $100 by member Linda Rivenbark , Natchez Trace, $125 schools,  a “voice” at the February meeting made a $50 donation to the Merchant Marine Library.

Public Relations Chair, Phyllis Wilson had 7 articles submitted with photos of chapter members in area newspapers.  Secretary, Pat Tucker has written an article for the Newsletter (Gray book) to be published in August 2019 edition.  Chapter note cards/print are in the February Gray Book for sale. This chapter fundraiser was implemented by Past-President Linda Rivenbark.
We continue to do our work on Betsy’s Rock, (the 1812 marker) and are working with Southport Historical Society, The City of Southport, Mr. Jim McKee, Site manager Brunswick Town/Ft. Anderson State Historic Site for a Marker to be placed near the USD1812 of North Carolina monument erected April 13, 1938.
Respectfully,
Kathy Miller

News From Captain Johnston Blakeley Chapter

Have you thought about marking your ancestor’s grave? Well, Toni Osegueda, a member of the Captain Johnston Blakeley Chapter (North Carolina), U.S. Daughters of 1812, didn’t just think, she acted.

First, she submitted a supplemental application and it was approved in January, 2019. Once it was finalized she worked quickly to purchase the marker and get the details nailed down. Osegueda was then able to complete her mission of marking the grave of her 5 times great-grandfather, Private William Harris.

On May 22, 2019, a ceremony was held at Linnville Christian Union Church in Thornville, Ohio, to mark the grave of Private Harris. Four descendants, along with the members of the U.S. Daughters of 1812 Lucas Sullivant Chapter (Ohio), participated.

Private Harris served in the War of 1812, under Captains Sutton and Bartholomew. He marched from Licking County, Ohio through Franklinton to Upper Sandusky.

Thank you, Toni, for spearheading this recognition of your ancestor.

The gravestone of Private William Harris, Died January 28, 1873, Aged 80 years, 10 months.
