President Betsy Hamer presents our chapter's accomplishments during State Council Meeting

State Council Meeting, August 1, 2015

North Carolina Society United Daughters of 1812 State Council Meeting
Welcome to our new State President, Ms. Elaine Baldasare

President Betsy Hamer with new State President, Elaine Baldasare

Commissioner Charles Gause Chapter was well represented at the State Council Meeting with 11 members attending.  Chapter member Pat Elsaesser was sworn in as the new Recording Secretary for the State Council. Ms. Jenny Wilson presented a fabulous program entitled "Troublesome Years - 1812-1820."  She spoke about the weather in North America and Europe which took a bizarre turn with freezing temperatures and snow during the summer months that resulted in widespread crop failures and famine.  During that cold snap, Mary Shelley wrote her classic novel, Frankenstein.  It was discovered in later years, the climate change was caused by a volcanic eruption.
After a delicious lunch, chapter presidents spoke on what their chapters had accomplished during the year and WOW were the state's five chapters busy! Member Kay Kye was honored with a Military Service Award and certificate from National along with Carol Jutte for winning the National Scrapbook Award and Cindy Sellers for her 200th Anniversary Program of the Star Spangled Banner held at the Fort Johnston Garrison in Southport, NC.  In addition, we had the most new members join our chapter with a total of 11 and a certificate for our blog site - a big shout out to Phyllis Wilson for this major accomplishment!  President Betsy Hamer will announce all of the certificates at our next meeting. Congratulations members for all of your hard work and next year we will continue having fun while working for our communities and honoring our ancestors of 1812.

The Commissioner Charles Gause No.433 Chapter of the National Society of the United States Daughters of 1812

The 1812 Daughters will hold their June 6th Meeting at 11:00 at the Southport Community Center Annex, which is next to the Southport Library on Moore Street. The guest speaker will be Andrew E. Duppstadt; Program Development & Training Officer, Historic Weapons Program Coordinator, Interpretive & Training Services Section, which is in connection with NC Division of State Historic Sites located in Queen Street, Kinston, NC. Andrew Duppstadt’s topic of discussion will be “North Carolina’s War of 1812 Naval Heroes: Johnston Blakely and Otway Burns.” After the meeting, speaker and lunch we will all go to the Maritime Museum, which is next to Fort Johnston for a tour.

Our 1812 chapter, under the direction of President, Betsy Hamer has had a unanimous response from all the daughters who would like to donate a Fort McHenry 15 stripe flag to the museum, They are looking at a 3 x 5 sewn cotton flag.  It could be displayed on a wall, hung with the other flags or posted on a stand.  While Fort Johnston did not see military action during the War of 1812, it was a base for the militia and the privateers did patrol our coast.

Commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans

On January 8, 2015, the Daughters of 1812 Charles Gause chapter placed a wreath on the marker between the Southport Community Building and Garrison house in downtown Southport, NC to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans. On January 8, 1815, the final engagement in the Battle of New Orleans took place which was a huge victory for the United States, even if  the War of 182 was technically over while it was being fought. More than another in U.S. history, this battle developed a national identity and established the United States as a power to be reckoned with.
