Let's Order Wreaths for Wreaths Across America to Honor Our Veterans

 

Hope we will be able to put a wreath on every Veterans Grave at Wilmington National Cemetery for December 16th, 2023.  This is the perfect time to honor our Veterans. Hope you will think so too. If you order online be sure to e-mail Phyllis your receipt at par4wilson@gmail.com. She can check wreath orders electronically. 1812 Daughters can order a check made out to Commissioner Charles Gause Chapter 1812 for any wreaths you want to order and mail it to our treasurer, Cindy Sellers. She will order wreaths by writing 1 or 2 checks two weeks before the closing date of November 28^th at midnight. The checks must be received by Feb. 28th.  Our chapter has purchased 22 wreaths so far this year. We have 1,826 wreaths purchased as of October 30, 2023. We need 3,300 more wreaths to reach our goal of 5,126 wreaths to put a wreath on the grave of every Veteran. Thanks for all your support. We really need the chapter to participate and purchase wreaths. I would like to see members at least order 1 wreath now. Then in December between December 15 and January 16^th I would like the members to order wreaths online because they are having a 2 for 1 sale for Wreaths Across America. For every wreath you buy you get 2. If you want to order by check you need to do so individually. You can e-mail me at par4wilson@gmail.com and I can send you a form for WAA with detailed instructions. I plan to ask my neighbors to participate in this. They usually do this in November,  but I am waiting for the 2 for 1. If any of you want to have friends order wreaths online please e-mail them the website for our blog site. Encourage members to order by credit card because we get immediate feedback on their orders. The checks that are written during this time have to be dated December 15 - January 16^th. Then mailed right away. I don’t want to burden our treasurer with the 2 for 1 sale, especially since it is around the holidays.  I can help you with any questions you have. If someone wants to ask neighbors to help and you want to collect their forms and send them in you need to fill out a tally sheet. So, before doing that e-mail me.

Commissioner Charles Gause Chapter USD 1812 - Photos from Tour of Poplar Grove Plantation on October 7, 2023

 

The current house, a 12-room Greek Revival-style mansion, was built in the early 1850s by Joseph Mumford Foy. The Plantation is now under the care of Poplar Grove Foundation, Inc. Poplar Grove opened as a museum to the public in 1980.

This 1800s historical site offers an 1850 home, tenant house, blacksmith shop, weaving and basket studios, farm animals, exhibits, gift shop, picnic and playground area, weekly farmers market, and access to the Abbey Nature Preserve-- 67 undeveloped acres full of dog friendly high and dry trails that will take you through beautiful trees, plants, flowers and wildlife. Join them for special events like Paranormal Tours.

How old is Poplar Grove Plantation?

The community was named after an enormous poplar tree that once stood in the area; hollowed out, it supposedly served not only as a barn for livestock, but also as shelter for Confederate Soldiers traveling through the area during the American Civil War.

At Poplar Grove Plantation they had decorated all the rooms on the lower level for Halloween.

This is the Gout Chair, which many of the gentlemen used to get due to eating a variety of fish and drinking alcoholic beverages. They would put it in front of a chair and elevate their feet.

Women used this chair to sit on and apply their make-up before getting dressed in their lovely dresses.

First Meeting for 1812 Daughters this year is on October 7, 2023

 

Hello Ladies

 This is a reminder of the upcoming meeting for the Commissioner Charles Gause Chapter, Daughters of 1812. We are going to try this again for a tour of Poplar Grove Plantation that was canceled last year because of the hurricane.

 We will need a head count for those attending Poplar Grove tour and the lunch at Sailfish Restaurant. The cost for the guided tour is $12.00 per person. Both places will need a headcount.

 This email is a short note about the meeting and will be followed by a later email closer to the meeting date with pertinent information about the meeting.

 Included in this email are attachments from Laura Edwards, North Carolina State President with the NC State Newsletter and the NC State Yearbook.

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

 9/11 REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY

The Richard H. Stewart, Jr. American Legion Post 543 and St. James Fire Department will host a remembrance ceremony commemorating the 22nd anniversary of 9/11. The service will be held at the St. James Community Center at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, September 11, 2023.

 The remembrance service is a moving and appropriate way to memorialize the tragedy that struck our nation on September 11, 200.  FDNY Captain (Retired) Pat Cleary will share his memories of responding to the alarm and escaping the WTC North Tower collapse on that fateful day. 

The SJ Fire Department will ring the ceremonial fire bell, Taps will be sounded, and Amazing Grace will be played in honor of the victims who perished. American Legion Post 543 is named after Richard H. Stewart, Jr. who was killed that day, in the WTC, and was one of the first victims of the war on terror.  His parents were residents of St. James and were responsible for getting the 9/11 national flag to Southport on the tenth anniversary of 9/11 in 2011.

The ceremony is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend.

The chapter's namesake, Commissioner Charles Gause

 

The chapter's namesake, Commissioner Charles Gause was a Revolutionary War veteran who lived in Brunswick County, NC. He was instrumental in the founding and growth of what is now Southport NC.  Gause was one of five commissioners appointed by the state legislature in 1792 to oversee the town’s founding.

Chief Junaluska 1812 Chapter - Henderson, NC

 Erick Rundquist is pictured presenting the JROTC Award on behalf of the 1812 Chief Junaluska Chapter to Stacy Perez-Ibarra. Stacy is a graduate of North Henderson High School and has been a wonderful addition to the Corps of Cadets. She led the fundraising efforts that enabled students to participate in two separate field trips. Both were multi-day activities for JROTC training in Virginia and in Florida. She also served as a JROTC teacher's aide and supported blood drives, organized cadet logistics, and has been a positive force in all the JROTC activities in North Henderson High School. Congratulations to Stacy Perez-Ibara

Naturalization Ceremony on July 3, 2023 and The 4th of July Parade in Southport.

 The program starts at 5:30.  The NC 4th of July Festival is set to hold the 24th annual Naturalization Ceremony on Monday, July 3, at the Ft. Johnston Garrison House Lawn.

2029 was the last Naturalization Ceremony that was held in Southport. Let's make an effort to attend this year.

These photos were taken in 2019 at the July 4th parade. Our Brunswick Town DAR chapter and many of our 1812 chapter members are also Brunswick Town DAR members. Hope many of you will attend on Tuesday. Come in early by 10:00 if you want to see the parade plus get a parking place.
