Let's Commemorate the Battle of New Orleans and the War of 1812

Members of Commissioner Charles Gause No. 433 Chapter of the National Society of the United States Daughters of 1812 gathered in Southport on Saturday, January 8 to commemorate the Battle of New Orleans. Diane Price, chaplain, gave a brief program on the “Unlikely Allies and Unsung Heroes of the Battle of New Orleans” and the aid of the Freemen of Color, pirates, Indians, women and Nuns to the victory of the much smaller US force. On January 8 1813 General Andrew Jackson’s force of between 3,500 and 5,000 engaged and defeated more than 8,000 British soldiers in under two hours. Following the talk members placed a flower for their ancestor and toasted those patriots as well as the allies and heroes so often unmentioned.

Cooking in the 19th Century at the October 2021 - 1812 Meeting

 

President Pat Gooding welcomes everyone to our October 2, 2021 - 1812 Meeting.

1812 member and guest speaker Lisa Pomeranz gave an informative and very interesting PowerPoint presentation on "Manufacturers that were in existence then that are still in existence today."

Lisa brought samples of food items that were used years ago and are still being used in 2021.

Display of some cookbooks and pots and pans from years ago. Many of us still use this type of cookware.

Wreaths Across America - Let's Put a Wreath on Every Grave at Wilmington National Cemetery

Dear 1812 Members, 

My name is Phyllis Wilson, and I am the Wreaths Across America chair for our U.S. Daughters of 1812, Commissioner Charles Gause Chapter, to sponsor wreaths for the Veteran’s graves at Wilmington National Cemetery, 2011 Market St. Wilmington, NC 28403

Wreaths this year will be placed on the graves on December 18^th.    I have not received any notification if there will be a formal program this year. As the time grows nearer, I will send out another e-mail with more details.

I would like to ask your help in sponsoring one or more wreaths in memory of or in honor of servicemen in your family.  It’s a big order to cover these graves in a beautiful Christmas remembrance of those who served for us.

There are three ways to order wreaths:

1.      Carol Jutte e-mail you this information and there is an attached form you can click on the download and print the order form.  Fill in your information, the name and rank of the service person(s) and a number of wreaths, and whether in memory of or in honor of (a living person.)  You can mail the form and your check to me at 2737 Juneberry Lane; Southport, NC 28461    The Fundraising Group ID is NC0025P.  The Location ID is NCWNCE (Wilmington National Veteran’s Cemetery.) Make out your check to Wreaths Across America. I will also have forms at our 1812 meeting this Saturday, October 2, 201 at 10:30 in Southport.

2.     Call Wreaths Across America at 877-385-9504.  Be sure to give the ID #’s. NCWNCE;  Group ID is NC0025P

Orders by check should be in by November 20th. Orders by credit card should be in by November 30^th.  If you have questions, please do not hesitate to call me:  910-253-1474. We have 4,186 wreaths sponsored and we need 940 more to cover 5,172 graves at Wilmington National Cemetery. Our 1812 group has 181 wreaths purchased. We are in 7th place for having the most wreaths. Thank you Carol Hart for getting the corporate donation of 10 wreaths from Winding River Veterans Assoc.  I do feel if you order wreaths by using a credit card either by calling the main number or doing it at the suggested website we see the results much more quickly. The turnaround time to get the checks, mail them then process them takes several weeks. I will happily accept check donations. I will also assist you with ordering a wreath too. As long as you have the ID #’s. NCWNCE;  Group ID is NC0025P, it is really easy to order a wreath. Also, you will get a receipt e-mailed to you. 9/11 Remembrance Event

 American Legion Post 543 and the St. James Fire Department will host its 9/11 Remembrance event at the St. James Community Center at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 11. The event will be held indoors.

Attendees will pause to remember the first responders, Post 543 name-sake Richard H. Stewart, Jr, and others who perished on that fateful day.

Donations to the USO of North Carolina from the NC Daughters of 1812 and Dames of the Court of Honor

 North Carolina Daughters of 1812 and Dames of the Court of Honor can be proud of themselves as they recently donated nearly $800 in goods and cash to the USO of North Carolina.

The donations were collected during the organizations’ annual statewide meetings held at the North Carolina State University Club, Raleigh, North Carolina, on Saturday, August 7, 2021.

The donation, which included nearly $400 in cash and checks and about the same dollar amount of various food and toiletry items, was delivered to the USO by Mary Ann Loss, a member of both lineage societies and a USO volunteer.

Samantha Reid, manager of the Raleigh Durham International Airport USO, inventoried the contributions after they arrived at the center.

“Imagine over 100 packs of cookies, about 375 bags of chips, 450 plastic bags, more than 100 first-class mail stamps, and a variety of personal care items,” she said.

“Most of the donations will be used to provide snacks for America’s warriors as they travel through the Raleigh-Durham International Airport,” she added.

“Additionally, the toiletries will be sent to Camp Lejeune for young women and men who are just starting their military careers as U.S. Marines.”
