Hi Ladies, I do hope you and your families are doing well!  As we all adjust to the stay at home order, the Friends of the Library Southport and; Oak Island (FOLSOI) has been working with community partners to live stream programs and provide resources for all.  The weekly programs for the month of April offered by the Southport Historical Society and FOLSOI might appeal to some of our DAR chapter members.  Please feel free to share this email with our chapter members if you think there would be any interest. Southport Historical Society  and; Harper Library present Armchair History Classes Please join us for these April programs to be held live online via Zoom,* a free software tool that lets you join an online presentation from your computer or tablet. All classes will be held on Thursdays in April from 1 - 2:15 pm April 2   – Southport and the War to End all Wars Southport’s population doubled overnight in 1917 when more than 1000 troops-in-training were sent to Ft. Caswell. Learn how the town adapted, and even thrived, in their sudden new role as a military support town. April 9   -  Southport and the 1918 Flu Pandemic The “Spanish Flu” pandemic killed more than 13,000 people in North Carolina. Find out how the citizens of Southport and the troops at Ft. Caswell fared during the crisis. April 16 -  Southport and Women’s Right to Vote Southport women were committed to improving their city even before they had the right to vote. Learn about the women who sought political change and worked to help women get out the vote. April 23 -  Brunswick County Moonshining Moonshining was a way of life and a part of North Carolina’s culture for over 300 years. Come hear the history and folklore of distilling whiskey in Brunswick County. April 30 -  Prohibition and Smuggling in Southport Prohibition began earlier and lasted longer in North Carolina than in the rest of the United States. Daughters of 1812 Workshop

When:  March 28, 2020, starting at noon

Where:  UDC State Headquarters House in Raleigh, corner of Lane and Blount Streets

Topics:  How locate 1812 ancestors and prepare applications

This workshop is open to anyone interested in becoming a member of 1812 and to current members who are interested in preparing supplementals.  We will talk about the application form and about locating lineage documents and the types of service that our organization accepts.  Bring your laptops and your questions.  I will have a brief presentation and then take questions.

Commissioner Charles Gause No 433 Chapter of the National Society of the United States Daughters of 1812 celebrated their tenth anniversary on Saturday at their February 1st Meeting.

The Commissioner Charles Gause Chapter celebrated its 10th Anniversary by honoring our organizing Chapter President Nora Hickam who cut the cake for us to enjoy during the program.

1812 Member Delivers Books to St. Mark Catholic School in Huntersville NC

On Friday, January 31, 2020, Dale Spencer, Committee Chair for the  Veteran Outreach Program delivered two Penguin Young Readers Level 3 book  " Red, "White and Blue The Story of the American Flag" to Principal Burton and Media Specialist Mrs. Burns at the St. Mark Catholic School in Huntersville, NC. The books were donated by Commissioner Charles Gause No.433 Chapter of the National Society of the United States Daughters of 1812. The total number of books that were donated to three counties and 10 libraries is 102 books.

1812 Meeting Scheduled for February 1, 2020

The next chapter meeting is Saturday, February 1, 2020 at the Indian Trail Meeting Hall, 113 W Moore St., Southport (next door to the Harper Library). The meeting is at 10, doors open at 9:30.  We'll find a fun place for lunch
afterward.

1812 Commemoration of the Battle of New Orleans

1812 Commemoration

US Daughters of 1812 gathered around a monument on the Fort Johnston Garrison House Lawn in Southport, NC.  The monument was erected by North Carolina Society in 1938 to commemorate the role of Fort Johnston in the War of 1812.   There were 14 members and 2 prospectives in attendance who placed flowers, named their soldiers/sailors/Patriots, rang a bell, and commemorated the Battle of New Orleans and War of 1812.  Afterwards, the members gathered at Fishy Fishy Restaurant at the Yacht Basin and raised a glass to their 1812 ancestors, sang “The Battle of New Orleans,” and enjoyed the camaraderie that is the spirit of the US Daughters of 1812.  This was the 6th annual commemoration event held January 7, 2020.

In this photo Cindy Sellers, vice-president, is providing information about the Battle of New Orleans which took place on January 8, 1815.  Although it took place after the Treaty of Ghent, because of the terms of the treaty, it was still a necessary battle.  Cindy is reading from the Chalmette Battlefield site about the importance and impact of the victory.
