The 1812 Daughters held on June 6th Meeting at 11:00 at the Southport Community Center Annex. The guest speaker Andrew E. Duppstadt. His topic of discussion was “North Carolina’s War of 1812 Naval Heroes: Johnston Blakely and Otway Burns.” After the meeting, there was a tour of the Maritime Museum, which is next to Fort Johnston.

President, Betsy Hamer's daughter, Deborah Hamer, a new 1812 member enjoyed attending the June meeting.
Diane Price, vice-president and Betsy Hamer, president of 1812 presented Mary Strickland, Executive Director of the Maritime Museum in Southport, NC with a Fort McHenry Flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes donated by General Cause 1812 Chapter. The Woodman of the World will donate a pole and stand for the display of the flag at the Maritime Museum.

Carol Jutte, state historian wins garden flag at 1812 meeting.

Nora Hickam, is a member of Commissioner Charles Gause No. 433 Chapter of the National Society of The US Daughters of 1812. She is the recipient of the prestigious "Spirit of 1812 Award,” which was presented to her at the June 6th 1812 meeting this year. “The Spirit of 1812 Award medal can be awarded to an individual or to an organization with a distinguished record of study, promotion and dedication to the preservation of the history of people, places and events of the War of 182. The candidate must have demonstrated a committed effort to preserve a certain aspect of the War of 1812 and the culture of the time period."
Nora was nominated by the Board because of her outstanding work and contributions both to the 1812 Chapter, but also to the community as well. Besides being the Organizing President of the newest 1812 Chapter in the State, Commissioner Charles Gause, she served as both National and State Registrars for the society. Nora has written several articles for major historical societies and genealogical magazines as well as written several family history books that are in various libraries throughout the country.

Carol Jutte, state historian for NC wins National Award for her 1812 scrapbook. Associate Council, the United States Daughters of 1812 annual national meeting is held yearly, in Washington D.C., during April. Each state historian (41) are asked to submit a scrapbook of all chapters in their state. North Carolina's scrapbook was the national winner for an outstanding scrapbook.

The 1812 Daughters will hold their June 6th Meeting at 11:00 at the Southport Community Center Annex, which is next to the Southport Library on Moore Street. The guest speaker will be Andrew E. Duppstadt; Program Development & Training Officer, Historic Weapons Program Coordinator, Interpretive & Training Services Section, which is in connection with NC Division of State Historic Sites located in Queen Street, Kinston, NC. Andrew Duppstadt’s topic of discussion will be “North Carolina’s War of 1812 Naval Heroes: Johnston Blakely and Otway Burns.” After the meeting, speaker and lunch we will all go to the Maritime Museum, which is next to Fort Johnston for a tour.
