Wreaths Across America 2013

Wilmington National Cemetery 12-14-13, 1233 wreaths were laid on graves.

Veteran Day November 11th

 Hundreds of patriotic supporters along with the Richard H. Stewart, Jr. American Legion Post 543 attended  a Veterans Day Program on Monday, November 11 at 3 p.m. at the St. James Veterans Memorial adjacent to the St. James Community Center(SJCC) in Southport, NC. There was a commemoration ceremony honoring all veterans, past and present. All communities in our area were invited  to join us in celebrating our veterans with great respect and admiration. The Colors were presented by the South Brunswick High School JROTC and our National Anthem and other patriotic selections were sung by the Sea Notes Choral Society. Speakers were  State Senator Bill Rabon and Congressman Mike McIntyre. Refreshments were served following the ceremony in the SJCC.

October 12, 2013 1812 Meeting

Lisa English was the guest speaker at the October 5, 2012 Meeting  held at the Reserve Golf Club at St. James Plantation in Southport, NC. Lisa is a member of the Rockfish DAR Chapter. Lisa  presents workshops on how to fold The Pocket Flag. She folds these flags and they are given to active duty military when they leave on deployment. Lisa explained the Blue Star and Gold Star Banner Program and also a  special program related to honoring prisoners of war and those soldiers missing in action.Here is Lisa's contact information if you would like to have her give a workshop. llenglish@centurylink.net

Maytu Szalankiewicz, President of our 1812 chapter was very pleased with the 1812 meeting which was held on October 5th at St. James Plantation. The next 1812 meeting will be in March 2014. 

The National Headquarters of National Society Unites States Daughters of 1812

The National Headquarters of National Society Unites States Daughters of 1812 is located in Washington D.C. This property has been placed on the National Register of historic places by the United States Department of the Interior in 1987. It was dedicated on April 7, 2002.

           The 1812 Society purchased the Queen Anne style home in 1928. It was built in 1884 by Rear Admiral John H. Upshur.  Dedicated members of the National Society United States Daughters of 1812 have donated historic artifacts, books for the library and other memorabilia. They have also the last seventy-five years collecting items of furniture to enhance the Queen Anne period furniture.

Commissioner Charles Gause No. 433 Chapter of US Daughters of 1812 have helped decorated the North Carolina room in the Queen Anne style.

A Gift of Art

Herb Pritchard took an early retirement after a twenty-five year Federal career,  and went back to graduate school for three years to become a mental health professional.  He had a very life-enriching career working in mental health clinics, prisons, private practice and assisting victims of abuse here in Brunswick County. Since his latest retirement he has volunteered with Southport / Oak Island Counseling Service, Southport Elementary School kindergarten, hospice and Stephens Ministry.  His principle interests are relationships, painting, tending his garden and nurturing his soul. Herb is an artist and he has a devotion to paint oil portraits at no charge for families who have lost a loved one in our recent wars. 1812 Meeting on October 5th at 11:00

                            

The next 1812 meeting will be held on October 5, 2013 at 11:00 in Southport, NC at St. James Plantation in The Nicklaus Room.There will be five choices for lunch. Please decide ahead of time what you might like to order to speed things up. The choices for lunch are: You do not have to let Phyllis Wilson know you want for lunch. You can decide when you get to the meeting.

1. Broccoli Cheddar Quiche and house salad salad  $8.00
2. Chilled Salad Medley : Chicken and tuna salad served with fruit, banana nut bread, and poppy seed dressing  $9.00
3. Italian Panini: Capy, Proscuitto,  ham, Arugula, Tomato, Mozarella and pesto aioli $9.00
4. Half Club sandwich turkey, bacon, lettuce &; tomato; Cup of soup du jour $10.00
5. Margherita Pizza: tomato sauce, tomato, fresh mozzarella and fresh basil. $8.00

$1.95 charge for all non alcoholic beverages.  You can pay with cash or credit card. No checks.

Dress code: no denim; men need to wear a collared golf shirt

   ·         You will need to stop at the entrance gate and get a pass for the day. Just tell them you are attending an 1812 meeting at The Reserve.

Directions: St. James Plantation is located on Rt. 211 in Southport, NC.  The entrance is across the street from the St. James Plantation Real Estate Office and the Community Center.

·         You will be on St. James Drive when you come in gate. Stay on St. James Drive until you see Ridge Crest Drive. You will make a rt. turn there. The speed limit is 30 mph, you will be on this road for about 5 minutes.

·         Make a left turn onto Wyndmere Drive. The speed limit is 25 mph. Stay on this road until you see the parking lots and large building on the left. That is the club house. Park your car anywhere you want near the club house. Go up the stairs to the porch and walk in to the greeting area. You will go to the end of the entrance way and make a rt. turn to The Nicholas Room. The bathrooms are across the hall.

Lisa English, DAR member  of the Rockfish Chapter presented workshops in all three locations at the Fall Forum and also during lunch each day gave a short talk about her project of folding pocket flags to give to the military men and women who are deployed.
