Andrew Duppstadt is the Assistant Curator of Education for the North Carolina Division of State Historic Sites. He has a BA in history and an MA in public history from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he served as a Teaching Assistant to renowned Civil War historian Chris Fonvielle. Previously, he has worked at the CSS Neuse State Historic Site, Fort Fisher State Historic Site, Tyron Palace HIstoric Sites and Gardens, and the Carteret County Historica Society.

Andrew also serves as an Adjunct Instructor of History at UNC-Pembroke, Coastal Carolina Community College, and Craven Community College. He is a founding member and President of a living history group called the Carolina Living History Guild. Andrew currently lives in Kinston NC.

Jackie Craft's husband was recognized for service during the Vietnam era - Michael Christian Craft, US Air Force.

Martha Blacher's brother served during the Vietnam era - James Reid Pettis, Army.

The 2 -for-1 Wreaths Across America was a Huge Success for Daughters of 1812

 

                     

Our 2-for-1 Wreaths Across America Sale was a huge success. Our chapter as of today has 92 wreaths. There will be a few checks processed to give us a few more wreaths in the next few weeks. We can thank 13 people for buying all of these wreaths. Nine of these 13 people were members. Just think if all of our members would buy just 1 wreath. Well, guess what? You have the rest of this year to purchase a wreath. Just go to the Wreaths Across America tab and follow the directions. It is easy to do. You can also give our Wreaths Across America chair, Cindy Sellers a check made out to the 1812 Commissioner Gause Chapter and put Wreaths Across America or WAA in the memo line.

Only 6 members together have purchased  20 wreaths which became 40 wreaths already for the 2-for-1 Sale. Just think if all of our members and friends would buy wreaths in the next 5 days. We will have over 200 wreaths for 2024. If you haven't bought a wreath yet please go to our website. There is lots of information on the blog and on the blog tab to order wreaths. If you aren't a member of our chapter please feel free to click on the website and buy a wreath or 2 or more for our Veterans buried at Wilmington National Cemetery. You have until midnight on January 16th to purchase wreaths. Then they go back to buying 1 wreath for $17.

Diane Price provided information about The Battle of  New Orleans:

During the War of 1812, more than 5,000 Americans were imprisoned at Dartmoor Prison between 1813 and 1815. The majority were seamen and most were crews of privateers. On April 7, 1815, months after the war officially ended, an altercation between some of them who were outside the buildings and the guards, an alarm was sounded.  Shots were fired and seven prisoners were fatally shot.

It was the end of July before all the prisoners returned to the United States.  More than 200 Americans are known to be buried in the prison yard.  Records list at least 14 privateer seamen from North Carolina died at that desolate prison in Devon England.

Wreaths Across America is Sponsoring a 2 for 1 Sale: Buy 1 Wreath Get 1 Wreath Matched up until January 16, 2024.

 

This is the first year in 2023 that we haven’t put a wreath on the grave of every Veteran at Wilmington Nation Cemetery in a long time.  Wreaths Across America is sponsoring another program that should spark an incentive to want to buy some wreaths. It is called 2 for 1. If you buy 1 wreath for $17.00 we get 2 wreaths to put on graves. If you buy 5 wreaths there will be 10 wreaths to put on the graves.  The 2-for-1 program started December 16th. If you have already bought a wreath by credit card I would suggest doing the buying the same way. Only 2 things: Go to the website below which will take you directly to the 1812 Commissioner Gause Website site and don’t add $3.00 to their technology fund. Below is the information you need to do this. You will get a form e-mailed immediately after you buy your wreaths, but you will be e-mailed another receipt, and that one would list our chapter on it. It should have listed it on the first immediate receipt too. I would like you to forward me the 2nd receipt that they e-mailed you for my records. The 2-for-1 Sale started on January 16, 2023. If you are going to buy by credit card you have until January 16, 2024, to purchase some wreaths. That is the last day of the 2 for 1. You have until January 16th at 12:00 midnight to purchase wreaths. Then the 2 for 1 is over. My e-mail address is par4wilson@gmail.com.    

 

 If you are going to buy a wreath by writing a check you need to make it out to Commissioner Charles Gause Chapter 1812.  You would need to mail Cindy Sellers your check ASAP since mail will be slow. The checks must have a date between December 18 - January 16, 2024, to be considered for this 2-for-1 purchase. Contact Cindy at  cindysellers@ec.rr.com. She will give you her mailing address.

You have until January 16th at 12:00 midnight to purchase wreaths. Then the 2 for 1 is over. Let's all rally and buy a few wreaths. I think if all our members would buy wreaths we will be in great shape to put a wreath on every grave for 2024.

There is also another way to order a wreath and that is by phone. You call:  877-385-9504 You tell them how many wreaths you want to order. They will ask you the cemetery locations – Wilmington National Cemetery; and the sponsor number which is NC0025P.  Our chapter had 51 wreaths sponsored by many people who ordered wreaths this year other than chapter members.
