Commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812

Carol Canales, State President of 1812 and Gwen Causey, Honorary Vice President National attended a Symposium Committee meeting on November 14, 2011 with representative from the city of Southport, Brunswick Town/Ft. Anderson, Fort Fisher and Jeffery Bocket, Assistant Curator of Education with the NC Division of State Historic Sites. The meeting was held at the Fort Johnston Garrison in Southport. The initial goal of the committee meeting was to oversee the planning of a symposium scheduled in Southport for October 20, 2012. The symposium will include lectures, living history, a luncheon, children’s activities and the day will end with a memorial service. During the meeting it was agreed this committee should oversees the activities also planned or to be planned for the entire week long commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. One suggestion made by Gwen Causey, Honorary Vice President National from North Carolina was to hold the same program held in 1938 for the existing marker to include a new plaque duplicating the original words on the marker that has faded over time. The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for January 23, 2012 at 10:00 am at the Fort Johnston Garrison in Southport.
